Extortion

Extortion is a white collar crime that is committed when a person coerces or intimidates another person into giving him/her money, property, or services.  When people commit extortion, they unlawfully obtain what is not rightfully theirs through the use of verbal and/or physical threats, and sometimes violence.  In the United States, large crime groups often commit extortion as a means to an end.  Crime groups commonly use extortion to obtain desired funds, property, or services.

Unlike blackmail, extortion involves the threat of physical harm versus the threat of something that is legal or normally allowed, such as reporting falsified documents.  When people make threats or use force to extort property, they can be charged with extortion, even if they have not received money, property, or services as demanded.

White collar crimes, such as extortion, are classified as serious criminal offenses.  These types of crimes are not usually investigated by local law enforcement, but rather the State Attorney General’s Office, or federal agencies such as the FBI, IRS, and SEC.  After a person is believed to have committed a white collar crime, he/she will more than likely be subject to lengthy and invasive investigations from federal law enforcement and the government.

For this reason, people should always consult with an experienced white collar crimes attorney when they have been charged with extortion.  A white collar crimes lawyer can provide effective, reliable legal counsel and aggressive defense tactics to combat a person’s criminal charges.
